What are Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks, medically termed striae, are the scar-like, sunken, discolored lines/streaks on the skin formed by quick stretching/contracting of the skin. They are harmless, not physically painful, but cosmetic skin issues that can impact one’s looks, esteem, and confidence. In severe cases of skin distention, the skin could even be disfigured.
Generally, stretch marks appear on:
- Abdomen
- Hi-ps
- Thighs
- Upper arms
- Bre-asts
- Buttocks
- Lower back.
Based on the stretch marks causes and when they develop, given below are the different types of stretch marks:
- Striae rubrae- These are newly formed, slightly raised, and itchy, red, or discolored stretch marks.
- Striae alba- These are mature, depressed, white stretch marks.
- Striae gravidarum- These are the pregnancy stretch marks that appear on the abdomen, thighs, breasts, and hips.
- Striae atrophicans- An underlying illness like Cushing’s syndrome or corticosteroid use is the reason for stretch marks of these kinds.
